This past weekend, the Lady Fishermen broke a long-running losing streak with two wins, including one at home, against the tough Arlington Spyponders, who recently beat them on their turf earlier this month.
After losing in early January during a gruesome overtime period, the Lady Fishermen were going into Monday’s game ready for revenge. Unfortunately, Arlington snagged the first goal of the game within the first five minutes of the game.
The first period didn’t end there however, Gloucester’s own freshman Emma Krawczyk quickly matched the tough competitors with over half a period left, and both teams took advantage of this time. In the final five minutes of the first period, Arlington tipped in two more goals leaving the fishermen in a bad position. Nevertheless, sophomore Kaya Collins scored with less than a minute left, leaving it a one-point game going into the second period.
“After the first period we knew we had a game.” Senior Captain Elliana Parsons said. “We were determined to give it our all and make a comeback.”
As the second period began, Arlington advanced their lead with a tough goal for senior Captain Kaydin Cusamano to save. Luckily and skillfully, Gloucester had another buzzer-beating goal performed by senior Teyah Fleming with only twenty seconds left on the clock, leaving them close on Arlington’s tail.
Going into the third, the team knew they had to keep Arlington out of their zone and find the net themselves. Within the first three minutes, sophomore Fiona Black completed one of the two, leaving the scoreboard tied. Gloucester dominated the rest of the period, but were unable to score again, forcing them into overtime.
The fourth and final period of the game lasted almost the full length, with both teams giving it their all. With a minute left on the clock, sophomore Melanie Earl, was able to sneak in a goal, securing the massive win for the team.
“I’m very proud of all my teammates.” Parsons said. “Especially the underclassmen who got most of our goals. Everyone went in with the right energy and mindset, and we hope to carry that through for future games.”
The Lady Fishermen will be playing the Lady Chieftains from Masconomet at home on Saturday, January 24th at 4:00 p.m.
