On a cold Thanksgiving morning, the Gloucester Fishermen suited up for their season finale in Danvers for their annual Thanksgiving showdown. Ultimately, Gloucester would come out victorious, 27-7.
Gloucester’s rivalry with Danvers is a timeless tradition that spans generations. Since 1964, the Fishermen and Falcons have faced off every year on Thanksgiving — excluding 2020 due to Covid-19. All time, Gloucester leads the Thanksgiving series 36-24. Before this year, Danvers held the Kiwanis Trophy since 2018 — holding onto a 7-year win streak.
Danvers is a very similar team to Gloucester. The Falcons run a very run-heavy offense, utilizing two tight ends and two wingbacks. Zachary Fultz is their leading rusher, putting up over 1,000 yards on the season. Starting off with four wins on the season, their win streak was snapped by a conference opponent, Beverly, in their first game of October. In the playoffs, Danvers was eliminated by Ashland 36-20.
As the game kicked off, Gloucester came in hot. On their opening drive, Gloucester would score in eight plays off the legs of Joseph Allen to take the lead. Thomas Cribbs would add a 2-point conversion to lead by 8 points.
A defensive stop on Danvers’ first drive allowed the Fishermen to strike back swiftly, as Jaylen Severino scored a 60 yard touchdown on a jet sweep to put the Fishermen ahead by 14 — even after a failed 2-point conversion.
Despite the early beating, Danvers remained a tough team and wasn’t ready to go down without a fight. A long drive, comprised entirely of runs, allowed the Falcons to get on the board and kick an extra point to cut Gloucester’s lead down to seven.
Knowing that Danvers would receive the opening kickoff in the second half, the Fishermen turned to the pass on their next drive. This would allow them to quickly drive down the field and the Fishermen did just that — quarterback Camryn Rodolosi threw his first passing touchdown of the season to tight end Gavin Bren.
Gloucester would go on to shut out Danvers in the second half and score another knockout touchdown on a 77 yard Jaylen Severino touchdown run.
The Fishermen finish the year with a 8-3 record, having three more wins than they did in last year’s campaign.
