Fall sports captains smile for the camera

The beginning of the winter sports season is just days away. Nights spent in the cold of the hockey rink or the mornings inside the hot wrestling gym will be starting before we know it, but before we do, let’s take a step back and recognize the efforts of the seven fall teams who wrapped up their seasons last month.

Cheerleading

Captains: Brooke McNiff, Emma Smith, and Bella Murawski

The GHS Cheerleaders executed an amazing season, placing high in competition. The group, led by captains Brooke McNiff, Emma Smith, and Bella Murawski, dazzled the GHS crowd with amazing stunts and strong tumbling skills.

Boys Soccer

Final Record: 14-3-1

Captains: Gino Tripoli, Brendan Anderton, Dom Paone, Leo Vitale, and Benji Watts

The boys soccer team played one of the best seasons in GHS history this fall, making it farther than any boys soccer team in GHS history. Finishing in second place in Division 3, the boys showed Gloucester what they were capable of during every game. The offensive line were a vigilant group, along with a group on defense whose skills proved lethal against their opponents. The seniors have been playing together for about 12 years and it showed during the season. Their aggressive gameplay and scoring got stopped by Dighton-Rehoboth in the third round, where they lost 4-1. The seniors this season have made a lasting impact on the seasons to come. With most of the starting lineup graduating, the team now looks on to this year’s swings and the JV to fill the shoes of this year's starters. Gino Tripoli, who scored a total of 32 goals and was named one of the six all-stars in Eastern Massachusetts, was named the NEC MVP. Tripoli and Dom Paone were named to the All-Conference team while Brendan Anderton, Leo Vitale, and Benji Watts were named NEC All-Stars.

Football

Final Record: 5-3

Captains: Micheal Toppan, Jayden Toppan, Cam Widtfeldt, and Ethan Mahoney

Coming off a hard 2022 season with only 3 wins, the Gloucester Fishermen football team turned things around to finish the season 5-3. The team started off the season with 3 back-to-back wins at Newell Stadium before hitting the road. Every home game ended in a win for the team, who were ranked 16th at the end of the season. The team unfortunately ended their season in the 1st Round of the D5 State Playoffs. This was their first appearance in the playoffs since 2018. The team ended their season with a hard fought loss against Danvers. John Gucciardi and Jayden Toppan were named NEC All-Conference players while Anthony Russo and Cam Widtfeldt were All-Stars.

Field Hockey

Final Record: 13-3-2

Captains: Ella Costa, Ari Scola and Abby Lowthers

The Gloucester Field Hockey team once again proved their dominance in the NEC. After their loss in a season opener against Swampscott, they went on a winning streak. With a total of 88 goals scored, their only losses were to Danvers, Swampscott, and Central Catholic. Only 14 goals were let through the entire season due to the strong defense.

They finished 2nd in the NEC, close behind Danvers. The Fishermen made it the farthest out of anyone in the NEC during the D3 State Playoffs. With two hard-fought wins at home to start off their run, they met with Newburyport on their home turf. Despite losing to this team last year, the girls were hoping to get revenge and come out on top. Unfortunately, they lost 3-1 in the third round. The team’s entire starting roster was made up of seniors, with the exception of Keagan Jewell in net. The team achieved a lot in their time playing together and the program now looks to rebuild for next season. Ella Costa and Abby Lowthers were named to the All-Conference team while Lily Pregent and Ari Scola were named All-Stars. Costa, Pregent, and Scola were also named some of the Gloucester Time’s top fall athletes.

Girls Soccer

Final Record: 7-7-3

Captains: Morgan Pennimpede, Isabelle Stauffer, and Gabriella Bottari

The Fishermen girls soccer team has made their longest run of the past six years, finishing 7-7-3 and making it into the Division 3 preliminary round of the playoffs. Despite the loss in this round, the girls played hard throughout the whole season. The team brought up 7th and 8th graders up to the varsity level to practice alongside the high schoolers and experience high school play. Most of Gloucester’s top scorers will be back for next season, so keep an eye out for another strong season ahead. Taiya Mano was named to the NEC All-Conference team while Abby Stauffer and Morgan Pennimpede were All-Stars.

Cross Country Track

Due to Gloucester not having enough interest in cross country this fall, runners ran along with Rockport and Manchester Essex for the season. Top runners for GHS Faith Castellucci and Colby Rochford, who have broken and set many records in Gloucester, finished off their season in style. Good job to the entire team.

Golf

Final Team Score: 342

Captains: Drew Johnson, Isaiah Francis, and Joesph Orlando

Finishing in tenth overall, the boys golf team finished off another successful season as in years past. The team made it all the way to the Division 2 State Championship, where they made a big impact on the tournament. Along with the seniors’ rock solid performances, the underclassmen played strong throughout the season. Joseph Orlando was the individual winner of the NEC Open with a 76. Orlando and Drew Johnson were named NEC Open Champions with a team total score of 160. Orlando and Johnson were named All-Conference, while Isaiah Franics and Nick Tarantino were All-Stars.
