On November 8th, the works of 17 Gloucester High photography students will be showcased in the annual Crane Estate Art Show. This show will take place in the casino building at Castle Hill of the Crane Estate in Ipswich. It will include works of both student and professional photographers. Photos submitted must fit this year’s theme of “passion”.
Emily Harney, the Gloucester High Photography teacher, submits her students’ work to the show every year. She said this year will have the highest number of students represented in the show.
For GHS Sophomore Shane Widtfeldt, this is the first time he has participated in a professional art show. Inspired by his older brother, who is an avid photographer, Widtfelt took Photography Freshman year and found a passion for it. He is currently in Photography II and plans to take Advanced Photography next year.
Widtfeldt’s favorite things to photograph are sports and nature. “I love photographing Gloucester and the ocean, and just taking in where we live,” Widtfelt said.
Widtfeldt’s photo that will be in the show was taken on the backshore in Gloucester. It depicts a figure holding a buoy against a sunlit sky, and demonstrates Widtfeldt’s commitment to getting the perfect shot.
“We got up at sunrise just to take the photo,” Widtfeldt said.
Cole Mosley-Wynn, a junior at GHS, will also have his photo in the show. Though Mosley-Wynn has never considered himself an artist, taking Photography this semester was more fun than he thought it would be.
“I’m not really good at drawing or painting,” Mosley-Wynn said. “Photography has helped me get better at being creative even if I’m not doing pen-to-paper art.”

Mosley-Wynn said his favorite thing to photograph is sports.
“Since I play, it’s easier for me to picture what situation a good photo would come out of,” Mosley-Wynn said.
Harney is excited about the show because of the opportunities it can provide for students.
“Kids have gotten jobs because [attendees] have seen their work and they’ve been like ‘Oh, you can do this?’ I’m gonna contact you’,” she said. “It’s important to make those connections to the community.”
Harney encourages anyone who can to attend the show– not only to see the importance of her students’ work, but to see the value of GHS art classes as a whole.
“We are making art so that other people can enjoy it too,” she said. “To have work out in the greater community is important so they can see the purpose of [Photography] class.”
