Did you know joining a club in High School can be beneficial?
Clubs can decrease loneliness and help people connect with others who share the same interests and hobbies. For people new to GHS, either freshmen or transfer students, joining a club is a great way to meet people at school.
Luckily, there are a wide range of GHS clubs that cover many interests and hobbies. If you want to join a club, here is a list and description of a bunch available:
Like playing chess? Consider joining the Chess Club, run by Mr. Roy. The club meets in room 2205 to play chess after school. If interested, email zroy@gloucester schools.com.
Want to start preparing for your career beyond High School? Consider joining DECA. DECA is an organization that helps prepare students for jobs post high school. The club’s goal is to teach students valuable skills for their future while being fun at the same time. If you’re interested, go to 3308 after school on Tuesdays. Interested in theater and performing arts? The Drama Club at GHS is perfect for you. The club covers singing, acting, and stage production. The club also runs a few plays across the school year that students, teachers, and parents attend. To join the club, go to 1310 afterschool, or email Ms. Dallin at [email protected] until December 3rd, or Ms. Ruggles at [email protected].
Do you like writing poetry, short fiction, taking photographs or making art? If so, consider working on The Elicitor, GHS’ Literary and Arts Magazine. The Elicitor is published every spring, and is created by GHS students. See Ms. Trigilio in room 2212 for more information.
Have you ever felt like learning about a foreign culture? Then French Club is a great option. Run by Ms. Finacy, the club learns about France and French culture. If you’re interested, go to room 1211 after school on Mondays. You can also contact her [email protected]
Are you interested in journalism? All students are encouraged to contribute to The Gillnetter, the online student news site for GHS. The club is open to everyone, and no journalism experience is needed. If interested, stop by 2212 on Wednesdays after school, or email Ms. Trigilio or any of the editors listed in the staff section.
Want to learn more about one of the biggest cultures in Gloucester? You should consider joining The Italian Club, run by Ms. Menary, if that’s the case. The club is about Italian culture. The club meets every Monday in 1213. If interested, email [email protected] for more details.
Do you like Jazz? Then you should check out the Jazz Band, which is a club about learning the ins and outs of Jazz. The club is run by Mr. Lundquist where students are taught how to play Jazz music. The group meets every Wednesday after school in 1407. For more information or if you’re interested in joining, email [email protected].
Are you interested in joining the army past high school? Then you should join the NJROTC Drill Team, which is a part of the JROTC program. JROTC is for people who are interested in or planning on joining the military beyond high school. The club meets every week Monday through Thursday. If you’re interested, email [email protected].
Want to join a club that celebrates diversity in our school? The SAGA club is a great choice if so. SAGA, which stands for Sexuality and Gender Acceptance, is run by Mr. J. Cook. The group meets every Wednesday during homeroom in 2301 and is a safe space for discussing topics of gender orientation and general diversity. Want to explore job opportunities while helping establish your future? The STEM club, run by Mr. Leigh, explores job opportunities offered by the STEM program. The group gets funding and is able to go on field trips to learn about jobs related to STEM. For more information, go to 2407 after school on Thursdays, or contact [email protected].
Are you interested in government and getting involved? If so, consider running for Student Council in the spring. The group is made up of students who want to address issues and plan events for the GHS community. If you are interested, email [email protected].
Do you want to get more steps in during school hours? The Walking Club, run by Ms. Hurst, is a perfect choice. The club meets everyday during lunch. The members meet outside the cafeteria during both lunches and walk for the duration of the period. If interested, you can go to the Health Center for more information, or email [email protected].
Want to work on the Yearbook? Then the Yearbook club is exactly what you’re looking for. Over the course of the semester, the club creates the yearbook. Collecting pictures and putting everything together to make the Yearbook. To join, go to room 3202 after school on Tuesdays, or email [email protected].
Woud you like to help improve the GHS community and environment? Then joining the Youth Advisory club is highly recommended. The Youth Advisory Club run by Ms. Hurst works on activities and events to help make a more welcoming environment in and out of GHS. The group also tries to make the Gloucester community stronger. Do you like building and creating? The DIY club/Robotics is a good club to join. Run by Mr. Lichtenwald and Mr. Barry, the club located in the Engineering Lab, is dedicated to building, designing, and engineering all sorts of things. Every year GHS has a club fair featuring a bunch of the clubs mentioned beforehand. The fair is a perfect time to join, check out, and learn even more about the wide variety of clubs at GHS in person.
