The Fishermen got back in the win column after they defeated the Saugus Sachems 32-12 on Friday night. The Fishermen headed into Saugus prepared for a big game, after their recent loss to Swampscott. The Fishermen needed this game to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Fishermen came out confident, winning the coin toss and electing to receive the ball. On only the second play of the drive, Joey Allen backed up their confidence, breaking out for a 67 yard touchdown to give the Fishermen an early lead. Saugus’ Ryan Shea did all he could for his team on Friday, breaking out for a 30 yard run on Saugus’ first play of offense, along with two touchdowns and an interception on the game. His efforts weren’t enough though, as big plays from Max Thomas thwarted any of Saugus’ offensive progress.
The Fishermen stayed on the offensive throughout the rest of the first half. After some big gains from Allen, receiver Carlos Velazquez went up over two Saugus defenders to catch a pass from Camryn Rodolosi and capped it off with the score. The Sachems answered back with a touchdown rush from Shea, but couldn’t capitalize on the extra point attempt. In response, Gloucester kept their foot on the pedal; Gloucester drove down the field and scored off of another Allen rush. Gloucester also converted in all of their 2 point conversions to give them a lead of 24-6. With the half about to end, things looked grim for the Sachems, as a dominant half from Max Thomas, in which he recorded 5.5 sacks, lead The Fishermen’s defense to success. The Sachems managed to catch a break at the end of the half, as Shea intercepted a ball thrown by Rodolosi trying to reach Gavin Bren. They capped it off by hauling in a tipped ball in the endzone to score a touchdown, Shea’s second of the night.
However, the Fishermen made sure Saugus’ break didn’t last long, blocking their extra point attempt, holding the lead to 24-12 going into the half. Gloucester’s defense shut out the Sachems in the second half, not allowing them to get in the endzone, and adding a big stop on fourth down which secured the game. Joe Allen ripped off another 67 yard touchdown run, giving him his third touchdown of the night, capping off Gloucester’s dominant 32-12 win.
Gloucester is back home on Friday night taking on division 5 team Falmouth. Kick off is at 6:30pm at Newell Stadium. The team looks to get another big win to move up in the playoff power rankings.
