The Fishermen Football team’s record fell to 3-2 after a hard loss to the Swampscott Big Blue. The Fishermen fought hard throughout the 27-6 game, but it ultimately wasn’t their night.
The game was eventful for the Big Blue in the first half as they scored 3 touchdowns. Henry Beuttler scored two touchdowns in the first half, garnering 85 total yards in the game. His first touchdown was a 24-yard run up the middle. Will Bush had the other touchdown in the first half for Swampscott, a 15-yard run.
The Fishermen struggled to get the run game going but were able to put together a nice drive before halftime. QB Cam Rodolosi had a strong pass to Joe Allen, who had a tough run to push down the field. Captain Jaylen Severino strung two nice runs together to push the Fishermen further into Swampscott territory. Severino took a hard hit during the drive and was taken out of the game with a concussion.
A holding call on Swampscott put the Fishermen close to the red zone. Pushes from Thomas Cribbs and Nash Marshall, along with a pass interference call on Swampscott, put the Fishermen in position to score. Cribbs’s two strong runs up the middle and a hard run by Kai Rich put the Fishermen at the 1-yard line. Cribbs dove into the endzone for the Fishermen’s first touchdown with 26 seconds to go in the first half.
The second half was a defensive battle. Evan Mione recovered the fumble after Fishermen defenders jarred the ball loose to slow down a driving Swampscott team. Unfortunately, the Fishermen’s offense struggled and failed to capitalize on chances in the second half. Swampscott scored on a late drive despite efforts from Gloucester’s defense.
The Fishermen are currently in the playoff picture, sitting in 16th place in the Division 5 rankings. They need a couple more wins to secure a playoff spot. The Fishermen look to get back on track this week as they travel to Saugus tomorrow night. Kick-off is at 6:30pm at Saugus High School.
