The League of Women Voters was at Gloucester High School today with meet with interested students and plan for the unusual Gun Forum to be held in December. The Forum is to be an open discussion with representation from people of vastly different opinions about the issue.
The Gun Forum (not debate) will have the following 3 panelists:
- Greg Gibson, Author and father of a random shooting victim.
- Mark Nestor, Vietnam veteran, decorated helicopter pilot, and now local attorney and Commander of the Lester S. Wass Legion Post
- Jim Wallace, President of the Mass. Gun Owners’ Action League (G.O.A.L.) which has 16,000 members statewide.
Moderator will be former Mayor John Bell, retired U.S. Army officer.
Panelists will express their varied views on the issue of guns in our society. All questions and comments will be written and screened. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
“This Forum is to help educate the community on both sides of the issue,” said GHS student Olivia Hogan-Lopez. “This is about listening to others.”
Students of all different viewpoints are welcome to help. Students will be working on preparation and research, and also as runners and greeters on the day of event.
“We are trying to find a balance,” said LWV member Marge Schernig. “The idea is to have a respectful discussion and listen to other viewpoints.”
The Forum is being sponsored by the LWV of Cape Ann. The event is free and open to the public.
