Girls lacrosse sprints into spring season
Last year’s girls lacrosse team
March 29, 2017
The GHS girls lacrosse team began its fourth consecutive season with its fourth different coach. Melanie Tobey took over as head varsity coach for the Fishermen with Brittany Devlin as the junior varsity coach.
Tobey, a GHS girls lacrosse alum herself, plans to take the girls to the conference championship and top last year’s record.
“My biggest thing is teamwork,” said Tobey, “and positive encouragement while bringing everyone together.”
Senior captains Julia Wood, Lily Kuhns, and Callie O’Leary will lead the team this year as fourth-year varsity starters.
“I’m excited for the season and I can’t wait for our first game on Friday,” said Wood.
Returning seniors also include Macaella Oliver, Rachel Alexander, Katelyn Moore, and Maggie Destino.
The dynamic duo of returning juniors Emily Kenyon and Sophie Caldwell will play a key role in this year’s season. Returning sophomores Ruby Melvin and Julia Kuhns will provide the team with a strong attack.
Last year, the team made the tournament but had to share the NEC Small Championship title with Revere and Salem. The team hopes to be the sole champions of the NEC Small division this year.
Watch the girls take the field for the season kick-off against the Peabody Tanners at New Balance stadium at 5:00pm this Friday.
