Last week, Gloucester High School’s golf team tied with Swampscott in the NEC Open Championship. The score was 165 to 165.

The team sent its two best players, sophomores Robby Horne and Colby Mitchell, to the championship as representatives of Gloucester. At the end of the game, Mitchell had shot 81 and Horne shot 84. Both players were crowned co-champions with Swampcott players Andrew Dove and Adam Dishman.

For 36 years, the Northeast Conference has provided student-athletes with opportunities to help them achieve their full-potential. They focus on many areas including academics, sportsmanship, integrity, excellence, diversity, community and national engagement.

The event also included a special appearance by professional golfer, Jordan Spieth. He signed autographs and talked to the boys about the match.

“It felt good standing on the eighteenth green with the trophy,” said Mitchell. He and Horne have been playing golf together for four years.

The team finished 9th out of 19 in the state tournament, but finished with an impressive record of 11-1-1. They only lost to Swampscott and tied Marblehead.

Next season the team plans to return seven of it’s eight top players.

“Next year I hope we win the conference,” said Horne.
