The Gloucester Fishermen competed against the Danvers Falcons and Saugus Sachems on Wednesday, demonstrating a strong performance against the strong, multi-talented teams.
The girls’ team demolished the Saugus team and took home almost every podium finish, but tied against a tough Danvers squad.
Three athletes shone on the girls’ side: Senior Madison Jewell, senior Captain Hope Castellucci, and junior Captain Grace Castellucci. Each athlete scored in two events, leading the team to victory. Jewell took first in the 300m and contributed to the winning 4x400m. G. Castellucci took second in the 300m and was also a contributing member of the girls’ 4x400m. Finally, H. Castellucci took second in a close finish in the 600m and second in the high jump.
The boy’s team dominated, beating both the Falcons and Sachems.
Junior Captain Seamus Linehan led the boys’ team in points and positions. He took first in the 55-meter hurdles, third in high jump, and contributed to the winning 4x400m relay.
There were numerous other outstanding performances on the boys’ side. Freshman Brendan Smith took first in the 600m and played a role in the winning 4x400m relay. Senior Captain Jeferson DoCarmo secured first place in the 1000m and contributed to the boys’ 4x400m. Freshman Lemi Marshall achieved a 10-second personal record in the mile, capturing first place. Senior Captain Lyall Cunningham took first in the 2-mile, winning by a minute over his opponent.
The track team also attended the Nor’easter Invitational at the prestigious New Balance track last weekend. Both teams put on outstanding performances.
On the girls’ side, Carla Kasera and Samantha Tucker both placed in the freshman 55m and the freshman long jump. The freshmen 4×400 (Iylan Mione, Ava Rogers, Gala Romero, and Kayla Cauthers) placed fourth. Charlotte Randazza took 3rd in the freshman/sophomore shot put. Finally, the varsity girls 4×400 team of Karsera, Madison Jewell, Grace Castellucci, and Hope Castellucci secured 3rd place.
The boys, despite having minimal numbers, held their own. Vincent Mannone took fifth in the sophomore 55m with a new personal record. Succeeding a spot on the podium, the freshmen/sophomore 4×400 team of Gabe Miranda, Lemi Marshall, Ethan Silva, and Hunter Quinn, took 3rd. Brendan Smith took 6th in the 600 with a new personal record.
The teams compete against Salem this Thursday at GHS.
