Last week, the GHS chapter of Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) took to Doubletree by Hilton Hotels (North Shore) for the District 6 DECA District Competition. Over 40 people competed in the Individual and Team categories, and went up against 17 schools that attended. 20 people placed in the district competition, and moved on to the next round of competition: the State Career Development Conference (SCDC) competition in Boston.
DECA is a program at the high school and collegiate level that combines business achievement with healthy competition. There are four divisons: entrepreneuship, marketing, finance and business. The DECA program at Gloucester High School is a well-attended program, led by chapter adviser Brady Frost, and chaperone Barbra deOliveira.
Just over 40% of DECA members at Gloucester High School made it to the State Level SCDC competition in the most recent round of competition.
In the Team Division, Gloucester had 6 groups place in a multitude of categories, showing that teamwork and collaboration pays off. Nathan Gorman-Melo and Merina Earl placed fourth in the Career Development Category, while Niava Friday and Madison Jewell got the same placing in Start-Up Business Plan. Working together on a roleplay, the team of Julia Palk and Mackayla Allen also received fourth place in Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making. In Hospitality and Tourism Operations, the team of Julian Nixon, Keira O’Brien, and Desire Dimino placed third, while Sofia Crivello and Martina Cracchiolo placed second in International Business Plan.
In the individual categories, Myles Tran-Harrison placed third for his project in Innovation Plan. Additionally, in professional selling categories, Isla Black and Magnolia Giddings got second place for projects in Finance Consulting and Hospitality Professional Selling respectively. Recently, Ava Vidal was bumped up in Retail Merchandising Series after placing 5th and a previous competitor dropped out.
In addition to these remarkable wins, Gloucester had three first place winners. Sophomore Janelle Brancaleone won with her Integrated Marketing Campaign Event. Junior Aleena Brown won in the Sports and Entertainment Operations category. Both girls did projects on the sport of softball. Lastly, the Junior Team of Serafin Costa, Henry Harrison, and Amos Telep won with a project researching Market Basket, in the Buying and Merchandising Operations.
Congratulations to all who competed, and good luck in March at the SCDC Competition!
