The NEC Freshman-Sophomore meet could not have gone better for the Gloucester Fishermen, with many podium finishes and remarkable performances.
The Fishermen are currently in a rebuilding phase after having no freshmen and only a handful of sophomores to compete last year. After off-season recruitment, the Fishermen have seen tremendous growth on the team with 19 freshmen and sophomores.
The girls’ team finished second overall, securing the highest team position in more than five years. On the girls’ side, two freshmen starred: Samantha Tucker, who took first in the long jump and fifth in the 55-meter dash, and Carla Kasera, who finished third in the 55-meter dash and long jump.
Other notable performances were from Callie Arsenault (sixth in the 300m), Kaila Cauthers (fourth in the 600m), Mia Rodolosi (fourth in the 1000m), Iylan Mione (fifth in the high jump), and Charlotte Randazza (third in the shot put). The 4×400 consisting of Arsenault, Adeline Amero, Cauthers, and Rodolosi finished third.
The boys’ team, with only seven underclassmen, finished sixth overall. Sophomore Vincent Mannone was a clear frontrunner, leading in points and medals. Mannone secured first place in the 300 and the long jump. He also contributed to the fourth-place 4×400.
Other notable performances came from Brenden Smith (second in the 600), Lemi Marshall (third in the mile), and Ethan Silva (sixth in the 55-meter hurdles). The boys’ 4×400 team of Smith, Mannone, Silva, and Marshall placed fourth.
Overall, the NEC Freshman-Sophomore meet was a huge success, with the Fishermen making many strong performances. The meet proved there are many Gloucester underclassmen with promising futures on the track.
