After a long day in traffic, the Fisherman Track and Field team arrived at Reggie Lewis Track and Field, ready to engage in fierce competition with all ten of the teams in the NEC.
With a young team of over 20 new athletes, head coach David Coleman sought to give the younger lineup a chance to show what they had to offer. With that being said, many of the upperclassmen were not seen in their signature events.
On the boys’ side, senior captain Leo Cosentino shone, taking first place in the long jump and setting a new personal record of just over 20 feet. He was the first state autoqualifier on both sides.
Cosentino also ran a leg of the boys’ 4×200, which took first place overall. Alongside teammates Landen Cusick, Jaylen Severino, and Dylan Rochford, the quartet was just under a second off the current school record. Lyall Cunningham (mile) and freshman Brendan Smith (600m) both finished with a new personal record in the mile. The 4x400m consisting of Vincent Mannone, Beckett Burchard, Jeferson Do Carmo, and Seamus Linehan finished 2nd and just 0.2 seconds off the state meet qualifying time.
“I think we did really well as a team,” Cosentino said. “We have good coaching and leadership on the team, so I have high expectations.”
Hope Castellucci was the star on the girls’ side, taking fourth in the high jump and fifth in the 1000m with a seven-second personal record. The girls’ 4x200m, consisting of Maddison Jewell, Samantha Tucker, Carla Kasera, and Grace Castellucci, finished 2nd and just two seconds off the state qualifier.
“It was a great start to the season,” Coach Coleman said. “The team shows a lot of promise.”
