This past weekend, the GHS girls’ hockey team fell to their talented rivals, the Beverly Panthers, with a final score of 5-7.
Going into their home opener, many of the girls knew that this game would set the mood for the upcoming season.
“We knew the girls we were up against,” Sophomore Fiona Black said. “It was going to be a challenge, and we [knew] we had to bring our all.”
Beverly recently lost their goalie, leaving the spot to be filled by Avery Mason, their first-year goaltender.
Early in the first quarter, freshman Emma Krawczyk buried it past Mason in a scramble for possession. Captain Elliana Parsons followed a few minutes later with a nice play setup. Beverly quickly responded with a goal of their own, leaving fans with a close score of 1-2 as they went into the second period.
As the second period began, the swift Panthers skated their way through all of Gloucester’s team and scored within the first 30 seconds. Within less than a minute, they took the lead over the Lady Fishermen with another goal. GHS was able to hold them off from scoring the rest of the period, but failed to score themselves, giving Beverly the edge as they went to the third.
By the third, things took a turn for Gloucester, and everyone in the rink could tell they were losing steam. Beverly scored 3 times within the first five minutes of the last period. Leaving the score at an intimidating 6-2 with only 10 minutes of playing time left. With barely any playing time remaining, Captain Keagan Jewell scored back-to-back, tightening the score. Beverly responded on a power play, weakening the Fishermen’s chance of a comeback. Freshman Lexi Francis scored in the last minute, leaving the final score at 5-7.
The Lady Fishermen are reading to fight on the road against the Masconomet Lady Cheiftans, Wednesday, December 17th at 5:00 p.m.
