Watertown Field Hockey has been the gold standard when it comes to the sport for nearly two decades. Rolling into Victory Field on a windy Tuesday afternoon, Gloucester knew what type of environment they were coming into.
Lacking the offensive prowess they had shown as of late, the Fishermen never managed a single shot on goal throughout the 60 minutes of regulation in the 2-0 loss.
“If we can learn anything from this game, it’s that we can hang with anyone,” Head Coach Lauren Riley-Gove said post-game. “All we need to do is polish a few things, mature a little bit, and put in the hard work on the off-season. [If we do that], we are going to be a tough team to beat next year.
“The level of field hockey that the team has been playing for the last couple of weeks has been wildly impressive,” Riley-Gove said. “Playing top teams and being right there is something to note.”
Goalie Keagan Jewell was arguably the player of the game, facing over 20+ shots and blocking the clear majority of them.
The Fishermen will be missing a majority of their success these past few seasons with the absence of their senior captain, who has undoubtedly bolstered the program since her freshman year.
“We have had fantastic leadership between the pipes from Keagan all season, and I would say that tonight was one of her best showings that I’ve ever seen,” Riley-Gove said when speaking of her netminder.
Jewell broke the record for most shutouts in GHS Field Hockey history, finishing with a whopping 47 shutouts across her four-year tenure.
Despite the losses of Jewell and her six other seniors, Riley-Gove remained positive about the future of the program.
“I’m excited for next year,” she said. “I feel that ending the season on a note like this is a great way to look to the future. We’re going to have a solid lineup next year, and if my offensive unit performs the way they did this season, we will be in a very fortunate position.”
