Is your closet overflowing with clothes? Do you have five formerly trending tops you no longer wear? The Youth Advisory Council has the solution for you.
Starting this week, the Youth Advisory Council will be running a clothing drive to benefit the Open Door and Second Glance. Until November 14th, the Youth Advisory Council will be outside the cafeteria during both lunches to collect clean clothing, shoes, and handbags.
GHS Junior Joey Porcello is taking the lead on this project.
“I wanted to do a project that focuses more on immediate community benefit, and people are always in need of clothing,” Porcello said. “This will also help the Open Door keep running, and profits will allow the Open Door to continue donating food to the community.
The Youth Advisory Council’s main focus this year is climate change. Porcello hopes to combat the fast fashion trend through the clothing drive.
“By finding a good way to reuse the clothing by donating it to a second-hand store, it eliminates clothing waste and greatly benefits the Open Door, which provides a lot to our community,” Porcello said.
The rapid change in fashion trends throughout the years has become a significant contributor to climate change. We are all guilty of buying into trends in some way, leading to an influx of clothes that end up in a landfill. But why should you donate to this clothing drive?
“It’s better to donate within the community because you can see the effects of your actions directly,” senior Hope Castellucci said. “You’re able to help people who may be your neighbors or your friends.”
Anyone who brings in ten pieces of clothing or more will receive a snack bag, so bring as many clothes as you can.
The YAC is looking for volunteers from NHS and NAHS to help pack up the clothes. Email [email protected] with any questions.
