All good things come to an end eventually, and that includes Gloucester’s perfect, undefeated streak. The starting roster’s expected performance was in limbo entering the season; they had a freshman trio taking over pitching duties and multiple position changes across the diamond. But they exceeded all expectations for the incoming season, powering past a stacked St.Mary’s roster and remaining undefeated for almost half the season. Their 9-0 start was the second highest all time, behind the 2019 NEC champion and D2 North Finalist team. While the Fishermen sought to tie this record at 10 wins and continue their unbeaten streak, they ultimately fell 2-1 against Bedford.
Boston College commit Alyx Rossi dominated the Fishermen’s lineup, striking out 14 and allowing just 4 hits.
The Fishermen started the game strong after Emma Carrapichosa homered to center field. Bedford tied the game at the bottom of the third after a Rossi single.
The game was knotted at 1 apiece until the bottom of the 6th. After a bunt single in front of the catcher, the winning run scored on an overthrow to the plate. Gloucester couldn’t recover on the offensive side, notching three straight outs.
Despite the loss, the Fishermen are now ranked 1st in the NEC, with Marblehead in second place. The Magicians dropped an NEC matchup to Masconomet in extra innings. Gloucester’s record moves to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the NEC. They face St.Mary’s in Lynn this Monday.
