For the first time in 5 years, the GHS boys basketball team defeated a talented Beverly team 77-73. This game was not just a tough NEC matchup, but a big bounce-back game for Gloucester after losing to Salem.
The Fishermen came out a little slow as they allowed Beverly to jump to a 8-0 lead. After an early time out, the Fishermen’s gameplay changed. Senior standout Nick Deleon had 26 points on the night. Seniors Andrew Cribbs and Charlie Amero, along with sophomore Carlos Velazquez, finished in double figures.
Gloucester played tough for the rest of the game, matching Beverly’s junior point guard, Jacob Klass, shot for shot. Senior Alex Laine controlled the tempo all night and hit two huge 3-pointers in the game, along with Cribbs, who sent the crowd into a frenzy late in the game, to help seal the deal. Brayden Francis played great defense throughout the game while Cribbs and Amero were tough in the paint, grabbing rebounds all night. With a few minutes left in the game, Amero fouled out but the Fishermen were able to continue to hit their shots, in what was the most exciting game to date. The Fishermen fans came out that night and it certainly felt like a home game. Beverly, a division 1 opponent, is always a tough challenge. This victory moved the Fishermen up to number 20 in the D3 standing from the previous standing of 36. The top 32 get an automatic bit to the playoffs.
The Fishermen moved forward from the big victory to take on the Winthrop Vikings, where they were able to pull out another 61-49 victory. The game finished with a nice performance by Carlos Velazquez, who scored 20 in the contest.
Once again, the Fishermen came out a little slow, but were able to pick it up later in the game to get back on track. It was a total team effort on Tuesday night, with contributions from most of the team. The Fishermen played sound defense, grabbing rebounds while finding the open shot and driving to the hoop.
The Fishermen look to continue their success on the court at Masconomet this Friday night at 7pm in a must-see matchup. The Fishermen lost a close game to Masconomet earlier in the season, so they will be looking for some redemption.
