The Gloucester Boys hockey team played Newburyport on Wednesday the 18th with a remarkable overtime win, 4-3.
In the first period, a showcase by Sophomore Goalie Trey Marrone shutting out Newburyport. Late in the period, Senior Captain Colby Warren scored an unanswered goal assisted by Senior Captain Cade Cooper and Senior Captain Giacomo Martell. This put Gloucester in the lead, 1-0.
“We persevered through a rough first period, and were able to catch a break getting a sneaky goal,” Captain Cade Cooper said. “We need to start having better first periods.”
The Fishermen started off strong in the second period, with an unassisted goal by Cade Cooper to make the score 2-0. Newburyport Freshman Jack Sullivan answered with a goal assisted by Sophomore Luke MacIsaac and Sophomore Henry Waddell to make the score 2-1. A little later in the period Newburyport answered again with a goal by Sophomore Luke MacIsaac assisted by Sophomore Henry Waddell.
To start the third period Gloucester broke the tie with an unassisted goal by Cooper to make the score 3-2. Late in the period Newburyport answered back with a goal by Jack Sullivan assisted by Senior Captain Will Forest to tie the game 3-3. Both teams tried to battle for one more goal in the third, but ultimately ended in a stalemate.
In overtime, Gloucester attacked the Newburyport offensive zone hard. This led to a goal just in front of the blue line from Senior Captain Chris Dailey, assisted by Colby Warren Winning the game for the fishermen and making the final score 4-3 and the teams overall record 2-0. They look forward to their home opener on Saturday, December 21 at 6pm at Dorothy Talbot Rink against Woburn.
