In the home opener and the first game of their hockey season, the girls hockey team were defeated in a 4-0 loss against the Shawsheen Valley Rams.
The game started with a bang, with the Rams scoring within the first 5 seconds. With plenty of time left on the clock, the Fishermen were determined to make a comeback.
They were able to skate the puck down to the Rams territory and had some strong shots on net, but they weren’t good enough to get by Shawsheen’s goalie. The Rams scored again before the 1st period was over, leaving the score 0-2.
Going into the second period, the team was motivated and ready to score. However, the Rams came with a bigger push, scoring within the first and last 10 seconds of the period.
Although the final score doesn’t reflect it, the teams seemed evenly matched with both having just over 20 shots on goal.
“I was disappointed, but it can also be viewed as a learning opportunity,” Captain Elliana Parsons said. “It was a good opportunity to see new lines made and introduce the younger players to the speed of the game.”
Being the first game of the season, Gloucester has plenty to look forward to and don’t plan to let this loss hang over their heads. After being able to see their weakness on the ice, the team is determined to improve and knows exactly what they need to do.
“We need to work on communication and we definitely need to work on keeping our heads up and passing because the amount of turnovers that we had was way too many where we could’ve scored.” Cusamano said.
The girls return to Talbot Rink on Wednesday at 6pm to face the Lady Chieftains from Masconomet. Fans can expect an intense game with the hope that the Fishermen will be able to snag their first win of the season.
