The Fishermen have now won back-to-back games, after defeating the Falmouth Clippers 22-14. This was another must-win game for the Fishermen, who hope to find a playoff spot.
Despite their record, Falmouth is a skilled football team. The Fishermen knew that going into the game, and in response, came out of the gate fast. The Fishermen put together a successful drive as Joey Allen punched in a 37-yard run to give The Fishermen an early lead. The Fishermen proceeded to lock up on defense and add to the score when Nico Alves intercepted a pass and took it into the endzone. With Allen converting both two-point conversions, Gloucester had the lead 16-0.
Gloucester hit a cold streak after halftime as little seemed to go their way throughout the 3rd quarter. Falmouth capitalized on a poor play from Gloucester and scored on a 49-yard pass and catch. The Clippers converted for two points as the score changed to 16-8.
Gloucester reset going into the fourth quarter as Camryn Rodolosi pushed forward to get into the endzone and get the Fishermen back on track. They held the lead 22-14, but big plays from Falmouth allowed them to reach the endzone again. However, the Fishermen held on to the ball long enough to win the game.
A major factor in the Fishermen’s win this week was their ability to control the pace of the game. The Fishermen held the ball on offense for most of the game. One of the Fishermen’s first-quarter drive lasted almost nine minutes. On top of that, they made big plays in big spots, converting and winning most of the fourth and short plays on the field while also making critical tackles when needed.
The Fishermen need this type of play to win against a tough Winthrop squad. This is a must-win game for both teams as they are in contention for a playoff spot. The game will be held at home tonight at 7pm.
