The GHS Racial Equity Team, represented by seniors Emma Allen and Maddie Wheeler, has received a 1000 dollar grant from Awesome Gloucester. Allen and Wheeler teamed up with GHS teacher Ms. D’Antonio and presented their case in competition with two other proposals, and ultimately, theirs proved the most persuasive to the board.

“Maddie and Emma presented our pitch wonderfully, I am so proud of them,” said Ms. D’Antonio. “Maddie and Emma were able to hold space and represent the important work that we do, and they just knocked it out of the park. They fielded questions and really highlighted the important work we can do with this grant to make sure that GHS is a beacon of welcome for all people from our student body and the wider community as well.”

The money from the grant will be used to fund the Culture Celebration Night, a popular event featuring good food, good music, and celebration of the many heritages represented in the Gloucester community. The grant will also pay for live musicians hired to play during the festivities.

“We are having meetings every homeroom day to discuss organizing our event,” said Emma Allen. “We plan on contacting local restaurants and asking for any donations or discounts for food, finalizing a location, booking a dj or band, and arranging other activities and games. Now with the grant, we will be able to do all of these things and hopefully have a great show out.”
