LEAP for Education is currently recruiting students for their annual paid summer internship program, and here are all the details.

Students will be able to gain workplace skills and earn money this summer through internships with local businesses. Payments include 6 weeks of income, either at an hourly rate or a stipend of up to $500. The program starts July 11th, ends August 18th, and includes eleven hour work weeks. Nine of those hours are spent in an internship or mentorship, and the other two hours are a workshop.

These workshops are about topics such as team work, communication, resume writing, interview skills, financial skills, stress management, and more.

“We have a lot of good speakers at all these workshops,” Program Coordinator JoAnn Leavitt said. “All of them are run by staff at project adventure, where they specialize in doing hands-on activities,”

Some examples of businesses offering internships are Appleton farms, Pathways for Children, Art Haven, Cape Ann Museum, Bank Gloucester, Gloucester Education Foundation, and more.

“We have a lot of really great partners in the community, and a lot of organizations have been really supportive,” Leavitt said.

The purpose of this program is to gain important workplace skills, and to build a solid resume for college and future endeavors. Added benefits to these internships include GHS class credits, a friendly staff, and district COVID protocols to keep everyone as safe as possible.

“We are there for help and support, and we check in with students at their intern sites to make sure everything is going okay,” Leavitt said.

This program is looking for 9th-12th graders residing in Gloucester. LEAP for Education also prioritizes applications of underserved youth. This includes low-income, first-generation-to-college, and youth of color. LEAP empowers underserved students to achieve social and economic mobility by cultivating personal, educational, and career growth.
