Yesterday, the Racial Equity and Advocacy club started a food drive that will run until May 16th. Students and staff looking to donate can either drop food off in the boxes that will be in the atrium and Ms. D’Antonio’s room, 2403.
This is the first year the drive will take place, as the club decided to combine its annual Cultural Celebration Day with the Students Arts Fest, and the food donations will be part of the club’s advocacy work. According to advisor Alyssa D’Antonio, the club hopes to continue the food drive in future years, to help provide nutritious meals for those in the community.
“Food insecurity is a huge issue. It affects far more people because it’s something that can be invisible when we’re looking at somebody,” D’Antonio said. “Lots of people struggle with it and lots of people do well at masking it. We want somebody to go in and be able to get a balanced meal.”
All donations will benefit the Open Door, and the Students Arts Fest, which takes place on May 18th. Additionally, any cans donated will be used to make an art installation, as part of the festival.
Below are the nonperishable items most needed for the drive:
Canned Chicken and Tuna
Peanut Butter
Healthy Snacks
100% Juice/Juice Boxes
Breakfast Cereal
Hearty Soups
Canned Fruits and Veggies
