Jeff Bezos to donate fortune to charities
November 15, 2022
Jeff Bezos, founder of online shopping empire Amazon, has stated he wishes to give most of his $124 million net worth to charity during his lifetime.
Bezos has stated that most of his earnings will go towards helping climate change and those who can create “unity” among humanity.
Bezos announced on November 12 that he would be donating $100 million to legendary country singer and philanthropist Dolly Parton.
“We’ve just announced a new Courage and Civility award recipient — @DollyParton, who leads with her heart, and will put this $100 million award to great use helping so many people,” Bezos tweeted.
Bezos also pledged $10 billion to the “Bezos Earth Fund,” his organization to fight climate change.
Despite Bezos’ donations, the CEO is facing criticism for his actions.
In the past, Amazon has lobbied against climate legislation and had an emissions spike in 2021, despite making a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.
Amazon has also frequently received complaints from workers about the treatment of employees, even though Bezos himself has said that the company needs to treat its employees better. These allegations have been brought up during his time as CEO.
People have also begun to wonder why Bezos decided to start giving away his fortune now. Previously, he has made pledges to organizations but none of them had really made an impact on humanity, such as sending himself to space with Blue Origin.
Is Bezos seeking to repair his tarnished reputation? Or has he secretly been this philanthropic all along? Whatever the reason, one can only hope that Bezos’ donations have as much of an impact as he hopes.
