Track and Field continues undefeated season

With the spring athletics season well underway, the GHS Track and Field team picked up right where they left off just a few short weeks ago. During the spring season, Gloucester combines its track program with Manchester-Essex, boosting talent and overall numbers. 

On May 11th, the team kicked off its official season after a scrimmage against Masconomet versus the Salem Witches at Newell Stadium. Continuing their hot streak, both boys and girls executed a massacre of the Witches, with scores of 113.5-21.5 for the boys and girls 97-18. 

Strong individual performances on both sides helped GHS handily get the win. On the boys side, first place finishes from Mike Moffet in the 400m hurdles (68.3), Will Kenney in the 2 mile (9:51.5), Luke Smith in the 100m (12.8), Sam Ashwell in the 400m (60.3), Andrew Coelho in the 800m and triple jump (2:09.3), (39’), Frank DeSisto in the 200m (26.7), Luke Walkama in discus(97’9”), Trevor Fulford in the long jump(16’10”), Ewan McCarthy in the the javelin (108’9”), and the 4x400m relay team of Kayky Barbosa, Colby Rochford, Jack Newton, and James Wendell (4:03.6) all propelled GHS to victory.

For the Girls, wins from Ella Young in the 400m hurdles and high jump (82.3),(4’6”), Jenna Smith in the 100m and triple jump (16.0), (30’5”), MacKay Brooks in the mile (6:13.9), Sarah Baker in the 100m hurdles and javelin (22.9), (59’7”), Caelie Patrick in the 800m (2:41.2), Darcy Muller in the 200m and long jump (28.3), (14’9”), Rumi Thomas in the discus (70’1”), Linda Toromo in the shot put (21’10”), and the 4x100m relay team of Smith, Muller, Young, and Thomas (55.8) earned them the victory. 

This Tuesday, the Fishermen took on Winthrop looking to continue their success from the previous week. The boys took care of business as usual with a 90-44 victory, and the girls tied 67-67 in one of the toughest matchups thus far. 

GHS boys placed first in events as followed, Trevor Fulford in the 400m hurdles and 110m hurdles (69.3), (18.1), Nick Poulin in the 2 mile (10:53), Luke Walkama in shotput and discus (38’5), (107’3), Luke Smith in javelin (110’4), Will Kenney in the mile (4:32.9), James Wendell in the 400m (53.9), Andrew Coelho in the 800m and the triple jump (2:09.9), (39’4.75), 4x100m relay team of Mike Moffet, Smith, Allan Segura-Jimenez, and Frank DeSisto (48.5), and the 4x400m relay team of Smith, Colby Rochford, Wendell, and Coelho (4:08.7).

First place finishes for the girls were Ella Young in the high jump (4’8), Mackay Brooks in the mile (6:13), Caelie Patrick in the 800m (2:24.5), Darcy Muller in the long jump (14’7), Sarah Baker in javelin (69’2), and the 4x400m relay team of  Patrick, Brooks, Madison Lawner, and Elorie Willwerth (4:49.5). 

Next week, the Fishermen take on Saugus next Tuesday at Newell Stadium, as the boys look to extend their win streak while the girls look to bounce back after a tie.
