It is season three for Gloucester High School’s girls hockey team, and the team is doing better than ever.

This year, the team lost three seniors, but gained eight new players from both Gloucester and Rockport.

New head coach JD Perry is leading the team, along with Assistant coaches, Bob Cooper, Myriam Callahan, Lindsay Marshall, and Donny Riley. Perry was an assistant coach the first year of the program, and came back to head coach this year. Marshall was also an assistant coach last year.

“After skating for almost three weeks as a team with only a handful of practices and just two games to our credit, the girls have shown immense improvement as individual skaters/players and in working together as a team,” said Perry.

The Fishermen won their first two games of the season against Groton and Pingree, and have a record of 2-0-0.

The first away game was against Groton on Saturday December 8th. The game was close, although the score was, 4-1 . Goals were scored by, senior Captain Jesse Alexander (1), senior Captain Bailey Marshall (1), and Freshman Cammi Cooper (2).

There was some excellent play from senior Captains, Caroline O’Leary, and Eliza Nugent. Also a great game played by sophomore goalie Rachel Daily.

The second game was home against Pingree on Wednesday December 12th. The girls won 8-2. Pingree was a match for the team, however it all came down to the goalies. Daily saved many shots that Pingree’s goalie could not.

Goals against Pingree were scored by Alexander (3), Cooper (3), Nugent (1), and senior Marissa Orlando (1). Marshall also played a great game with several scoring opportunities, and breakouts.

Senior Captain Lainie Noble is enthusiastic about the season, “I am so impressed by this season. When I did the game scorecard I couldn’t believe it was our team,” said Noble. “We have improved so much in such a short time.”

The Fishermen’s next game will be home on Saturday, December 15th, against Andover at 6:30pm.
