Last weekend, the GHS Track and Field team traveled to New York City to compete at Nike Nationals.
The mixed 4×400 team was seeded last in 22nd place entering the meet. Despite a poor final placing, the team put up a good race against the other teams. The quartet also broke the record previously set this year at the Northeast Challenge. The team of sophomore Seamus Linehan (55.2), sophomore Grace Castellucci (65.3), junior Dylan Rochford (53.2), and senior Skye Ciolino (62.6) placed 20th in the championship division.
“It was a blast,” Linehan said. “It was an honor to compete with such great athletes along with my team.”
The girl’s short medley relay competed on Friday night and placed 26th in the emerging elite division. The team consisted of Senior Aili Spencer (200- 27.2), Junior Maddie Jewell (200-28.2), G. Castellucci (400- 65.5), Junior Hope Castellucci (800- 2:33).
“It was amazing to be able to run at one of the fastest tracks in the nation,” H. Castellucci said. “And I got to hand it to my sister”.
On Friday morning, eighth graders Samantha Tucker and Addie Wood competed for Gloucester in Middle School nationals. Samantha Tucker placed 54th in the middle school 60-meter dash with a time of 8.57 seconds and 11th in the middle school long jump with a jump of 15-6 feet. Wood competed in the long jump with a jump of 11-2 feet.
The final event of the weekend was Spencer’s long jump. Spencer competed in the emerging elite division of long jump and was seeded 11th overall. Spencer missed finals when she messed up the run-ups and followed. The NEC Athlete of the Year finished 10th overall.
