It was clear from the beginning of the game that the Chieftains wanted to crush the Fishermen. Along the sidelines, the Masconomet Youth Field Hockey Program chanted for their hometown team as both groups of captains lined up to meet. It was the Chieftains who swept the season series and the win as they overpowered the Fishermen in a 4-2 win.
Olivia Madruga and Elliana Parsons scored for the Fishermen with assists from captain Emma Carrapichosa and Fiona Black.
Ava Guavin opened the scoring frame for the Chieftains within 4 minutes of the opening drive. Guavin scored again at the end of the first quarter, lengthening their lead early.
It wasn’t until the 3rd quarter that Gloucester got on the scoreboard. After another Chieftan goal earlier in the quarter, the Fishermen got an offensive penalty corner as the buzzer went off. As Madruga inserted it, Carrapichosa drove the ball into the circle for Madruga’s tip-in.
Parsons’s goal gave Gloucester a much-needed boost as she scored off a hard pass from Black. Gloucester had multiple chances afterward to tie the game, but overall scoring leader Mia Marques netted Masconomet’s fourth and final goal.
The game was chippy across the board with multiple dangerous plays from the Cheiftan defense. Madruga suffered an injury during the first quarter, which limited Gloucester’s scoring chances. However, she re-entered the game shortly after. This marks Gloucester’s 5th season loss, dropping their record to 5-5.
