The Gloucester Fishermen Field Hockey team is back in the win column after a thrilling 3-0 win against the Bishop Fenwick Crusaders. Olivia Madruga, Fiona Black, and Maddie Jewell scored with assists from Black and Emma Carrapichosa.
The first quarter has been hard in the Fishermen’s last 4 starts, with a majority of their goals scoring in the fourth quarter. This game was different, with two of three Gloucester goals scoring in the first quarter.
Madruga had the first punch for the Fishermen, scoring on a free hit. Madruga passed the ball to Isla Black, who was open on the sideline. I.Black passed the ball to F.Black on the post, who flicked the ball up for Madruga for the driving goal.
F.Black followed with her own goal 3 minutes later. The freshman collected the ball at the 20 yard line, running into the circle and made a wrist-shot up over the Fenwick goalie.
Gloucester’s last goal came from Jewell early in the second quarter. On an offensive corner, Carrapichosa shot the ball into the goalie, allowing Jewell to collect the rebound and shoot on the post.
Gloucester out-shot the Crusaders by over ten shots, dominating the offensive circle. They weren’t as successful in the midfield, however, losing many battles for the ball around the 50-yard line.
This game was a big step forward for the Fishermen, snapping a nasty losing streak after facing two top opponents back-to-back.
“I’m very excited about the win because we’ve been on this losing streak,” junior I.Black said about the win. “But at the same time, I feel like we haven’t played to our full potential. I’m excited to see us continue to progress.”
