The Marblehead Magicians couldn’t pull a trick out of their hats against the Gloucester Fishermen, who prevailed with a 5-0 shutout win. Elliana Parsons, Olivia Madruga, Maddie Jewell, Talia Harrington, and Fiona Black scored, with assisting by Mia Rodolosi, Isla Black, Harrington, Fiona, and Parsons.
The game was quiet in the first quarter, with shot attempts and corner chances building for both teams. Gloucester took the lead after Parsons scored from a rebound put into motion by Madruga. Shortly after, Madruga followed up with a goal of her own when Black placed a perfect pass to her.
Jewell added to the 2-0 lead early in the second half when a shot by Harrington was completed successfully. Harrington scored her own goal minutes later, after Fiona ran into the circle and shot across the net to slip it past Marblehead’s goalie.
Gloucester’s Fiona Black got her first Varsity goal of her career during the Marblehead matchup. Fiona collected the ball and dribbled down the field on a breakaway, shooting the ball through the Marblehead goalie.
“I was proud of the effort of the entire team,” Head Coach Lauren Riley-Gove said. “I took us about a quarter to settle in and once we did, the girls really played well. Ball movement and placement is your goal and hitting the net five times was a great start.”
Coach Riley-Gove instilled the importance of strong scoring from the beginning, one of the Fishermen’s main goals for the young team. The Fishermen had a lot to celebrate, with Captain Keagan Jewell’s first shutout in goal and two freshman players playing key roles in the team’s win.
The Fishermen play home today against Malden Catholic with a start time of 4:30.
