Leave your worries behind: go hiking

The Gillnetter’s Mason Gaumnitz recommends his favorite trails in Gloucester

MASON GAUMNITZ, Staff Writer

The town of Gloucester has many different trails and paths to explore that are spread out all across the town. From paths following the beautiful ocean to paths going deep within the woods, you can visit them all and explore the slice of heaven we call Gloucester.

The first path that I explored was the Babson Reservoir Dogtown Loop Trail. This hike isn’t for everyone, as it clocks in at 2 miles and it follows a loop around the reservoir. Its path is windy and rocky, but if you brave it out you can find some of the best views in Gloucester. There are many diverging paths so you have to make sure that you don’t get lost. It is easily one of the best trails in Gloucester.

Next up is an easier path called Ravenswood Park Trail. This hike is about 2.5 miles, and it is a trail you can take anyone on because of its easy-to-find path. If you take the time, you can find some views looking over the vast forest. The boulders that you can climb on top of give you a perspective that isn’t easily forgotten. If you live in Gloucester, this is a must-do.

The Red Maple Swamp Trail is a path that treks 1.5 miles. It is a simple walk that goes through the swamp lands. It has bridges that cross the water and mud, so you don’t have to get dirty when going on this adventure. Its path is able to be easily followed. It isn’t a taxing walk, so you can keep going for as long as you want. Its views of the treetops are nearly unmatched. My only warning is that you shouldn’t go right after it rains because some of the bridges will get slippery and you could fall into the water. The Red Maple Swamp is a nice activity to relax and spend some time with nature.

The most accessible hike is the Stage Fort Semi Loop. The path really has everything you can get views of Crescent Moon Beach and the ocean. From some places, you can see all of the boulevard. Stage Fort has a lot of historical memories for our town. The gazebo and greeting center are nice places to eat lunch and relax. The rocks and benches are amazing places to take naps. It has a huge field that is great for games, volleyball courts, and a baseball field. The Cupboard has some of the best food and ice cream in town. There is a dog park and playground so parents and dog owners can let their creatures run wild.

When you have the time, explore some of the wonderful trails our town has to offer. The hikes will be well worth your time, and the views will be unforgettable.
