The Fishermen Girls volleyball team is looking on the bright side after winning their first set of the season (but losing the match) against Winthrop on Monday.
The first set was a close loss, with the final score being 25-22. Junior Maddie Goodhue shined with two back to back digs that led to Gloucester getting the point. Captain Sara Fernandes had an impressive chase down to keep the ball in play.
In the second set, Gloucester lost some of their momentum, with the score of 25-14.
Gloucester was determined coming into the third set, pulling ahead from the beginning. Senior Desiré Demino, one of the team’s most consistent players, served what would lead to the game winning point. The final score of the set was 16-25, Gloucester.
Gloucester was celebrating going into the fourth set, but they were also exhausted. Though it was a loss, the fishermen girls played well with the score being 25-14. With this loss, their record is now 0-10.
Captain Jocelyn Maddalena, freshman Reese Cahill, and freshman Isabella Soundis all got kills. Sophomore Meghan Buckley and Goodhue got digs. Cahill had impressive blocks as a middle that got Gloucester the point.
Though the team is yet to win a game, they have improved tremendously from the beginning of the season and they now have a set under their belt. With six games left in the season, there is tons of opportunity for this new team to improve and win.
“We were able to [win the set] because of how hard we’ve practiced over the season,” Freshman Soundis said. “I think our teamwork helped us in that last set.”
