The Fishermen girls’ soccer team suffered a devastating loss against Saugus High School last Wednesday.
With captains Jessica Harvey and Ava Coehlo out because of injury, there were holes in the starting lineup.
“Our team is very young and we are very focused on being defensive at the games.” Captain Georana Cauthers said. “At this point, our team needs to focus on the basics and learn to work as a team.”
The Gloucester girls struggled to get things rolling, especially since Saugus scored its first goal within the first minute. The Sachems scored their second within the ten-minute mark. At the thirty-minute mark, a push from behind by Island Mione in the goalie’s box led to a penalty kick and another goal. By the half, Saugus was up 5-0 on the Fishermen.
There was a significant change in playing style after Hope Castellucci switched to center midfield and Meadow Anderson back to sweeper. Anderson controlled the field and held the Sachems off until Saugus scored its next goal halfway through the second half. Nearing the end, Saugus was able to find the back of the net again to secure a 7-0 win.
The Gloucester Fishermen will attend their next game on Monday, September 15th.
