The Gloucester High School Track and Field team had many strong performances at the NEC championship meet.
The girls’ team took 6th, beating all their Lynch Division (small schools) competition for the second time, scoring 54 points, while the boys’ team finished 8th with 23 points, despite that they were missing a few of their key players.
The girls’ team worked their way up in points, with many athletes contributing to the final score. Senior Skye Ciolino led the way in the running events, placing 2nd in the 400m and also being part of the 4×400. Also scoring many points was Megan Hurd, who took second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Cia Donohoe took 4th in the 400-meter hurdles and set a new personal record. Grace Castellucci took 4th in the 100 meters with a new personal best and state qualifier. Tess Taylor took 7th in the 100-meter hurdles and 5th in the triple jump. The Throws captain, Lauren Sargent, took 7th in the shot put.
To close out the top 8 placers, Hope Castellucci took 5th in the 800-meter. The 4×400 consisting of H.Castellucci, Donohoe, G. Castellucci, and Ciolino took third while the 4×800 relay team of Violet St.Marie, Isabelle Donnelean, Caitie Dewan, and River Silva took 6th place overall.
On the boys’ side, Jeferson DoCarmo was the star of the evening, taking 7th in the 400-meter hurdles and 8th in the long jump. Seamus Linehan placed 6th in the 400-meter hurdles and was part of the 4×400-meter relay team. Other team members took home medals, including Sam Heanue, who took 7th in shot put. Leo Cosetino took 5th in the triple jump. The 4×400 team, DoCarmo, Vincent Marrone, Adare Foster, and Seamus Linehan, took 3rd, the 4×100 team of Nicolas Clements, Dylan Smith, Gabe Pate, and Cosentino took 7th, and the 4×800 team of Lyall Cunningham, Matt Ala, Jonas Coletta, and James Aoli took 6th.
The team will next compete on Friday and Sunday at the Division 4 championships.
