It’s hard to complain about the little things when your team’s 5-0. You’ve got multiple All-Conference stars in the making, a freshman pitcher that dominates against top rosters, a lockdown defense, and an offense that does it all. But when you’re undefeated, it puts a target on your back and makes every misstep more obvious.

While the Fishermen softball team beat the Saugus Sachems in a windy day win, it wasn’t the perfect, blow-out game they expected. Despite this, freshman Abby Noble collected 11 strikeouts across another dominant game.

The Sachems took the lead in the first after a single scored a baserunner from second base. Olivia Madruga tied the game on a triple down the left field line, scoring Ava Paone from second base.

Saugus scored in the top of the second, singling on a blooper behind second base. While Emma Carrapichosa scored on a Julia Carrancho double, the Fishermen didn’t take the lead until the bottom of the 4th. Kaiya Mineo and Ava Paone hit two consecutive singles to score two runs.

The Fishermen took control in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 5 runs. Carrancho tripled to score Madruga, and Dylan Gaetano doubled on a center field line drive. Carrancho and Madruga were both a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

While their offense was tough, the Fishermen faced small struggles throughout the field. Miscommunications, passed balls, and missed catches plagued the early innings. The group struggled slightly on the basepaths, getting picked off more than twice. These mistakes proved inconsequential but would have deplorable effects against better opponents.

The 5-0 Fishermen will travel to Winthrop for their 6th game of the season.
