The Gloucester High Girls Tennis Team opened their season with a close loss of 2-3 against Lowell Catholic. The match revealed both impressive talent and deep dedication on the team in both new and returning players.
Senior Captain Katy Aaron had an impressive match in first singles. She won the first set with an impressive score of 6 – 1, but faced a close 5 – 7 loss in the second set.
Freshman Meghan Buckley, Gloucester’s second singles player, carried out an intense match that kept everyone on edge. She swept the first set, winning 6 – 1. However, she lost the next two 6 -7 and 5 – 7.
Senior Halia Taylor was next on the court and played a tough match. She ultimately ended up losing both sets 3 – 6 and 1 – 6.
In doubles, Juniors Keira O’brien and Esme Sarrouff played impressive matches. The team managed to win both sets with scores of 6 – 3 and 6 – 4.
Double partners Sabina Sappia and Meghan Frates scored a whopping 6 – 0 in two separate matches against the opposing team.
“[Our] key players this year will be Katy, Keira, and Esme,” Coach Gap Saputo said.
Ava Vidal, a new sophomore addition to the team, has been preparing to swap places with Halia Taylor. Fans can expect to see the two switch back and forth throughout the season.
Although facing a disappointing opening loss, the team has proven their talent and potential, with eager substitution players ready to step into action.
The team will be hungry for a win as they go on to face Saugus on Thursday, April 3rd.
