On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, six athletes competed at the MSTCA Heptathlon.
The Heptathlon is a meet in which athletes compete in five events, scoring points based on the world record. The events are the 55-meter hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump, and 800 meters.
On Tuesday, Aili Spencer, Hope Castellucci, and Caitie Dewan went to compete against the other 148 female athletes.
All the girl’s athletes set their personal best in one of their events. For Spencer, she set a PR (personal record) in the long jump of 17-10.75, breaking her previous school record by .50 inches. Castellucci set a season-best in the 800 meters running 2:36.01 minutes. Dewan set a PR in the 55-meter hurdle with a time of 10.82 seconds
Spencer placed 17th, Castellucci placed 95th, and Dewan placed 104th.
The boy’s team, comprised of Matt Smith, Jeferson DoCarmo, and Beckett Burchard, competed on Wednesday.
Smith led the way for the boys’ team setting personal bests in almost all of his events, including an over two-second PR in the 55-hurdles, an 8-inch PR in the high jump, a foot PR in the long jump, and a 20 seconds subtraction off his previous 1000-meter time.
Another athlete who performed well at the meet was DoCarmo. DoCarmo had never previously done 4 of the 5 events. DoCarmo was the leader in the long jump for Gloucester and placed 5th overall with a PR in the 1000-meters.
After Spencer broke the school record at all-states and the Pentathlon, senior track star Aili Spencer broke the school record again at the New England High School Championship.
