In the week leading up to the last regular season NEC track meet, Gloucester knew the task at hand; beat Swampscott to take the Lynch Division title.
The Fishermen were suffering a 9-year divisional drought, dropping the title in recent years to the powerhouse Masconomet Chieftains. Both Gloucester teams knew they had to put their best lineup out to win the Lynch Division title for the first time since 2016.
“The meet might come down to someone taking third and someone taking second,” head coach David Coleman said before the meet. The girls’ team prevailed, snagging the championship with a score of 48-38. The boy’s team came up short with a final score of 52-34, losing in the last four events of the meet.
Spencer was the top scorer of the night, winning both the 55 hurdles and the girl’s high jump. Other first-place finishes of the night were Maddie Goodhue in the 55-meter dash, Ciolino in the 300-meter dash, Hope Castellucci in the 600-meter, Caitie Dewan in the 1000-meter, and Ruby McElhenny in the mile.
Samantha Tucker (55-meter), Meadow Anderson (600-meter), and C. Dewan (high jump) placed 2nd for the Fishermen. Rounding out the top 3 were Maddie Jewell in the 300 meter, Auraylia Lord in the 2-mile, Sargent in the Shot Put, and Tucker in the high jump.
Although the boy’s team lost, they scored many points against the Swampscott squad. Dylan Rochford (55-meter dash), D. Smith (300-meter), Seamus Linehan (600-meter), Beckett Burchard (55-meter hurdles), and M. Smith (shot put) finished in 1st place.
Second-place finishers included M. Smith in the 55-meter dash and Lyall Cunningham in the one-mile. Third-place finishers were Gabe Pate in the 55-meter dash, Wall in the 600-meter, Jeferson DoCarmo in the mile, and Linehan in the high jump.
The meet was preceded by a celebration of the senior class. Senior honorees included Captain Dylan Smith, Captain Matt Smith, Braydon Wall, Aidan Woods, Captain Skye Ciolino, Captain Aili Spencer, Rose Groleau, and Captain Lauren Sargent.
This Sunday, the team will compete in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship.
