After a 4-0 loss last Saturday, the Girls Ice Hockey Team won their first game of the winter season last night against the Masconomet Lady Chieftains.
The girls had good control the whole game, and many young talent was able to shine on the ice.
During the first period, the girls saw a tremendous amount of action with over half the goals of the final score being made.
The Fisherman attacked the Chieftans’ net and kept the pressure. As soon as Masconomet got the puck, they skated to the other end and scored.
Determined to come back, Gloucester kept the pressure on. Masconomet was able to score again as the clock was ticking down. Learning from last time, Gloucester was more determined than ever to make a comeback.
With 3 minutes left on the first period, junior captain Keagan Jewell put the first Gloucester goal of the season on the board. Less than a minute later, 8th grader Lexi Francis scored, leaving the girls tied going into the second period.
Gloucester continued to dominate the game, keeping the puck in the Cheiftans’ offensive zone for a majority of the second period. Gloucester barely gave their opponents an opportunity to score.
The young players talent continued to shine through well after Francis’ goal. There was strong defense from 7th grader Ella Laurie and freshman Katelin Aloi, blocking shots on net and keeping it in the offensive zone.
Senior Captain Halia Taylor said that she saw a lot of potential and excitement in the younger players.
“There were a lot of goals for most of our newer players,” Taylor said. “Two received their first goal and I think that was a really momentous occasion for them and it helps keep them motivated and determined to continue scoring.”
With plenty of shots on net, freshman Claire Warde was able to follow through and score, giving the girls the lead.
During the third period, Gloucester had plenty of puck movement and took multiple shots back to back. Freshman Kaya Collins was able to score, lengthening their lead to 4-2 over Masconomet.
With only 2 minutes left in the game, Masco pulled their goalie to add another skater. With the net left open, Jewell was able to get a second, easy goal, Leaving the final score at 5-2.
This Saturday, the girls will travel to Endicott College to face the Beverly Panthers, a longtime tough NEC opponent.
