The Gloucester High School Rifle Team shot out the competition last weekend at the Metropolitan League Championship.

This is the twelfth consecutive year that the GHS Rifle Team has won the championship. They have not lost any competitions so far this year.

“We had two of the top three shooters,” said team coach Master Sgt.Carcel Dubose

Jaqi McCarthy, who started shooting  in the spring of her eighth grade year, placed first out of 25 individual shooters. Thuy Nguyen came in third.

This is the second consecutive year McCarthy has placed first overall.

“When we were wrapping it up, I knew I was in the top,” said McCarthy.  “It made me happy and I was proud of myself and my team for winning the league.”

“It has been a good experience in leadership for me because I was the captain this year,” said McCarthy.  “It was tough because I was in charge of getting the kids to shoot, but all in all it was a good experience.”

McCarthy encourages students who are not presently on the rifle team to try it out.

“You can go for just one day, and if its not your thing,  you never have to go back – but if you like it your welcome back any time,” said McCarthy. “It’s like a big family, everyone is really nice to each other.
