Those traveling on the canal last Wednesday likely saw a group of GHS students painting outside. The students, members of the National Honors Art Society, were given this opportunity to learn about and practice Plein air art alongside full-time artists.
This art form requires artists to paint subjects that are directly in front of them, as opposed to using reference photos. Thus, Plein air artists usually paint outdoors, using the landscape as their subject.
Plein air artist Beth Bathe from Lancaster, PA, was among the artists who worked with the NAHS students. For the three hours they spent outside, students had the opportunity to learn about Bathe’s experiences in her area of work, specifically the mediums she utilizes, such as water mixable oil.
Junior Mylee Towne, an NAHS member, had the opportunity to paint with some of Bathe’s unconventional materials including oils and squeegees.
“It inspired me a lot,” Towne said. “I think I’m going to get some of my own materials and start painting.”
A total of 30 students participated in this fun event and their artwork will be on display on Saturday, October 12th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the North Shore Arts Association. The event is free and open to the public, so bring your friends and come support the arts.
“I encourage you to go, if you have time,” said Art teacher Lorrinda Cerrutti who is also the adviser for the National Arts Honor Society. “Thank you for the overwhelming support for our NAHS students as they worked with the Plein air artists outside yesterday.”

What a great article, Isla. I love the short, direct quotes. I wouldn’t have known this terrific activity happened without this article. Thank you! Love the photos by Ms. Cerrutti, too. So good.
