Last Friday, the Fishermen Football team beat the Saint Bernard Bernardians by a score of 22-20 for their second win in a row. The game was a close contest with many defensive showings and big offensive plays from both teams. The difference in the game was Gloucester’s ability to convert on their extra-point attempts, while Saint Bernard failed to. Despite the Fishermen’s numerous penalties throughout the game, they pushed through and won.
The game started with the Fishermen scoring on their first drive, finished by Captain Thomas Cribbs. The Fishermen failed on the extra point. Following two quick punts by both teams, the Bernardians struck back, scoring on a play that was set up by a 42-yard punt return. They capped the drive off with a 2-point conversion, putting them up 8-6. Gloucester’s Quarterback Camryn Rodolosi answered with a 30-yard breakout rush to give the lead back to the Fishermen. After a successful 2-point conversion, the Fishermen were back on top 14-6. The Fishermen finished the half with a stop.
One of the deciding factors for the Fishermen this week was being able to run to both sides of the field.
“We knew this day would come, they are begging us to run to the strong side, and we are doing it, keep it up.” Coach Anderson said during the break.
The Bernardians dominated the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns in a row off forced turnovers. However, their momentum was halted when Joe Allen intercepted Saint Bernards’ pass, spurring the Fishermen’s drive down the field to score in the 4th quarter.
Cribbs scored his second touchdown to tie the game for the Fishermen. After Saint Bernard’s failed their extra point attempts, the Fishermen capitalized on a chance to gain back the lead. Jaylen Severino caught Rodolosi’s two-point conversion pass to give the Fishermen a 22-20 lead. Gloucester’s defense came up with multiple key stops to close out the game, capped off by Nash Marshall’s fumble recovery.
The Fishermen now boast a 2-1 record as they prepare for their home opener against Salem. The Fishermen and Witches kickoff at 7 pm in hopes of earning their 3rd straight win.
