After a tough week of practice, the Gloucester Fishermen football team lost to the Beverly Panthers, 27-14, in an attempt to set the tone for the year and make it back to playoffs.
The Panthers scored after a few big plays, which were matched by Gloucester’s offensive players, Thomas Cribbs and Jaylen Severino. A missed extra point attempt by the Fishermen made the score 6-7.
Beverly’s lead increased, after a passing touchdown on broken coverage, brought them up 14-6. Although Gloucester’s defense struggled with the passing game, they made some big plays to prevent Beverly scoring. Defensive lineman Max Thomas had many TFL’s (tackle for loss), making him key to stopping runs. After a lot of back and forth, Beverly’s running back Jayden Santos broke out for a 53 yard touchdown, though they missed the extra point making the score 20-6.
Gloucester had a strong attempt by receiver Carlos Velazquez when catching a 47 yard pass near the end zone, but was ultimately called back by a fumble call on the field. Beverly struck again with their fourth touchdown of the game, and an extra point bringing their lead up 27-6.
The Fishermen tried to stay in the game after quarterback Camryn Rodolosi threw a 27 yard touchdown to tight end Gavin Bren, and Severino carried in a successful 2 point conversion, but time got the best of this year’s team. The young Fishermen team has promise, as many of the players are starting varsity for the first time. With only 6 Seniors out of the near 70 players in the program, this could be the start of a “New Age” for Gloucester Football.
The Fishermen will try to reset this week and get their first win of the season when they head to Somerville to play the Highlanders this Friday at 6pm.
