The Gloucester Field Hockey team’s late-game heroics were not enough to defeat conference rival Masconomet in their home opener. The final score totaled 3-2, with Gloucester’s goals by Emma Carrapichosa and Olivia Madruga, with assists from Olivia Madruga and Elliana Parsons.
At the end of the first quarter, Mia Marques scored for the Chieftains, managing to sneak the ball past goalie Keagan Jewell during a scurry in front of the net. The Fishermen took multiple shots of their own, controlling Masconomet’s zone for a majority of the beginning.
The Chieftains jumped further ahead of the Fishermen in the first minute of the second quarter, when Mia Juliano scored on a Marques pass. Juliano scored again later in the game, with Marques helping on the assist.
Gloucester didn’t get into the action until late in the fourth, when Carrapichosa scored during an offensive corner. Madruga scored soon after, tapping the ball past the Masconomet goalie on a drive from Parsons. The Fishermen were once again in control of the field, but the team couldn’t tie the game in the final.
Both the Fishermen and Chieftains are fielding strikingly different teams from last season, as they graduated a majority of the starting lineup. The Fishermen are fielding a total of 6 freshmen and 8 sophomores on the roster. Despite the age of the team, the team stayed strong against one of the strongest teams in the NEC conference.
The sophomore duo of Emma Carrapichosa and Ashlyn Orlando were great in the midfield for the Fishermen, along with forwards Maddie Jewell, Fiona Black, and Mia Rodolosi creating opportunities to score in the circle.
“I think the girls had a great game,” Head Coach Lauren Riley-Gove said post-game. “Coming back with two goals late in the fourth [quarter] was huge. [It] shows you what you are capable of when hustle is involved.”
The Fishermen will travel to Marblehead High School tomorrow for a conference matchup at 4:30pm.
