On Monday, the GHS softball team was dynamic on both ends of their game against Wilmington, beating the Wildcats 7-2.
The offensive game was highlighted by at-bats from Ava Paone, Emma Carrapichosa, and freshman Mackayla Allen. Allen was a powerhouse on the day, hitting a double and a triple. Paone joined Allen on the triple route, with Carrapichosa having a double and 2 RBI singles. The bats were swinging for the Fishermen all night, with 11 hits during the game.
During the fourth inning, Wilmington attempted to make a comeback. Despite a Gloucester lead, the bases were loaded for Wilmington after Gloucester got two outs. There was a passed ball bounced off the backstop that freshman catcher Olivia Madruga collected and blocked the plate to end the inning.
Other highlights from Gloucester’s defense came from the outfield whose intensity has held strong throughout the season. Julia Carrancho made stellar catches in centerfield, with Allen playing a huge game at shortstop when the Fishermen required a fielding change.
The Fishermen’s win in the Round of 32 has moved them to the Sweet 16, where they will take a drive down to face Apponequet Regional on June 5th at 4:00pm.
