On Monday, members of Gloucester’s DECA club participated in DECA Day on the Hill, an annual event in which different chapters from around Massachusetts visit the statehouse in Boston.
To kick off the day, all chapters gathered in the flag room to listen to their state officers speak about the upcoming state competition and explain the different fundraising opportunities within the club. Afterwards, each town in attendance went up to receive their citations, recognizing their contributions and efforts within the DECA community.
After the ceremony, Gloucester club members were given the opportunity to speak to Senator Bruce Tarr in the Senate Chamber. Tarr explained the history behind the building, and spoke to different GHS students about their roles and experiences in DECA.
“I thought it was really cool to sit in the Senate Chamber,” sophomore Isla Black said. “It’s such an important location and so many state laws are created in the very room.” Isla has been in the club for two years, and has made it to states both times. Last year, she was the only GHS student to qualify for and compete in the international competition, ICDC.
Wrapping up the day, Gloucester members had the chance to meet and take pictures with Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante who spoke to students about the upcoming state competition.
Students who qualified for States will be heading to Boston again on March 7th for the 3 day long event. Students who place will then have the opportunity to attend ICDC, taking place in Anaheim, California in April.
