Although Sundays are dedicated to football, there are times when it’s acceptable to shed your jersey and break away from the confines of the couch. This Sunday marks such an exception, as GHS will be hosting the Harlem Wizards in a basketball game against Gloucester Public Schools staff.
The Harlem Wizards are an interactive basketball team that dedicates their time to school fundraising and nonprofits. This year, they’ll be playing GPS teachers to raise money for the Class of 2026. In addition, when purchasing tickets online, customers may choose the GPS school that their child attends, and $3 from the ticket will go to the corresponding school.
Students should especially consider being in attendance to witness their past and present teachers play against the Wizards. “It is bringing GPS teachers and staff together for a fun cause,” class advisor Jennifer Flaherty said. “Even if you’re not an athletic person, the tricks and the entertainment alone are super enjoyable to watch.”
GHS teachers Lorrinda Cerrutti, Khris Silviera, Emily Harney and Hector Riviera will be playing on the GPS staff team.
Local businesses will also benefit from this fundraiser as many of them have decided to sponsor the game. In addition, other schools in the district will gain from the fundraiser when a customer specifies what school their child attends, resulting in a $3 profit for the corresponding school.
The game, taking place in the GHS field house, starts at 2 p.m., but the doors will open at 1. Concession stands adorned with snacks and souvenirs will be located outside the field house. Tickets for the game can be purchased online through the Wizards website and they will also be sold upon entry to the school, but space is limited.
