The tradition of the Fishtown Horribles Parade is a key aspect of Gloucester's Independence Day celebrations. With endless fundraising efforts and countless hours preparing, the FHP Committee works diligently to create an incredible event for all of Cape Ann.

With this tradition comes the naming of the Parade Grand Marshall, a coveted position named to the individual or organization that impacts the community and projects Gloucester positively through their work. This year, the position was awarded to the Union of Gloucester Educators.

The Union of Gloucester Educators, which represents teachers, school counselors, and other education professionals in the Gloucester Public Schools, has been at the forefront of advocating for improved working conditions, fair contracts, and quality education for local students.

"We are over the moon thrilled to be asked to be the Grand Marshalls of the Horrible Parade" said UGE President Rachel Rex. "We are so humbled and grateful for the support this community has shown for its educators through the most challenging and tumultuous school year."

Over the past year, the union has played a visible role in negotiations with the city regarding teacher contracts, compensation, and classroom resources, often drawing public attention to the chronic underfunding of the district. Their leadership in calling attention to issues affecting public education has not gone unnoticed.

The Union will be leading the parade with the Grand Marshall's designated banner, an honor serving as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for their dedication, resilience, and impact both inside and out.

The parade committee raised over $9,000 along the route for next year's festivities, with an additional donation link still live on the FHP Facebook.

"The energy the city brought to the Parade Route on Thursday night was electric," said parade coordinator Amanda Goolsby. "It was truly amazing seeing how everyone came together despite the tragic loss to our community. "
